Exercise of the Week: Seated Eagle Arm Twist

We find that some of the best stretches (like the eagle arm twist) and exercises are those that can be done anywhere. Why? Because it’s that much more likely that people will complete the movements if they don’t have to worry about equipment, getting to a gym, or any other restriction. Consistency is key.

This week’s stretch falls into the category of “easy as can be”. The eagle arm twist helps build shoulder strength and stability. With stronger shoulders, you’ll find your posture will improve as well. As we’ve shared before, posture and ergonomics, whether at work or home, can make a big difference in how you feel.

  • Sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor.
  • Stretch your arms out at shoulder level, with your palms facing down.
  • Cross your right arm over your left.
  • Bend your arms upwards, in a 90-degree angle.
  • Twist your hands so your palms are facing each other.
  • Hold the position for 10-15 seconds.

You can also check out this other variation, which includes stretching your legs. Some people find that this seated yoga movement can help relieve lower back pain.

Please speak to your provider before starting any new exercise regimen.
