Tip/Thought of the Day

Choosing To Trust In Ourselves

How many of us can say we believe and trust in ourselves? That we know what’s best for us? What path we should be following?

Other opinions impact our decisions but no where near as much as our own. When we believe in ourselves we can overcome any obstacle and grow beyond the confines of every day life. Trusting our instincts and inner voice gives us the ability to find the path best suited to our unique needs. Together, they allow us to open our eyes to new possibilities.

No one is harder on us than we are. Setting standards and goals is commendable. But how many times do we actually stop, pat ourselves on the back, and give ourselves a break? Many of us are driven by the need for perfection that can never be realistically achieved and then are dissatisfied with what we do obtain.

I remember watching my daughter as she drew a picture for an art class. Every time she made some perceived mistake she’d rip it up and start all over again. Nothing I said made a difference. To her, it wasn’t good enough.

There has to be a balance between striving for perfection and having pride and satisfaction with what we do accomplish. Not constantly comparing ourselves to others’ goals and achievements, but instead, applauding their successes and still staying focused on our own abilities and triumphs. The world would be a sadder place if Picasso had listened to the worlds idea of anatomy. Or Monet didn’t paint his backyard lily ponds as he saw them. As with any canvas, it’s what the artist sees in its potential that matters.

We choose the mountains to climb and summits worth pursuing. Perhaps not reaching the pinnacle, but getting as close as possible, while enjoying every moment, detour and challenge along the way. Just as my daughter learned, sometimes what we thought was an imperfection was really just a different viewpoint that sent us in a new and amazing direction. The only limits that exist are the ones we place on ourselves.

As Norman Vincent Peale said:

“Shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”
